Professor Claudia V. Angelelli is Chair in Multilingualism and Communication as well as Director of the Centre for Translation and Interpreting Studies in Scotland at Heriot-Watt University (Edinburgh campus), United Kingdom; Emeritus Professor of Spanish Linguistics at San Diego State University, United States and Visiting Professor at Beijing University of Foreign Studies. Her research sits at the intersection of sociolinguistics, applied linguistics and translation and interpreting studies. She holds a Ph.D. from Stanford University, a Master of Arts (and two PG Certificates) from MIIS (Middlebury Institute of International Studies at Monterey) and a Bachelor of Arts from Universidad Católica Argentina.

She is the sole author of Medical Interpreting and Cross-cultural Communication (2004), Revisiting the Role of the Interpreter (2004) and Medical Interpreting Explained (2019). She is Guest Editor of the following journal special issues: The International Journal of the Sociology of Language: Translators and Interpreters: Geographic Displacement and Linguistic Consequences (2011), Translation and Interpreting Studies: The Sociological Turn in Translation and Interpreting (2012), Cuadernos de ALDEEU: Minding the Gaps: Translation and Interpreting Studies in Academia (2013) and Translation and Interpreting Pedagogy in Dialogue with other Disciplines (2014 w/Colina). She is co-editor of Researching Translation and Interpreting Studies (2015 w/Baer), Testing and Assessment in Translation and Interpreting Studies (2009 w/Jacobson). Her work appears in The Annual Review of Applied Linguistics, Communication and Medicine, The Critical Link, Cuadernos de ALDEEU; European Journal of Applied Linguistics, Interpreting, Journal of Applied Linguistics and Professional Practice, META, MONTI (Monografias de Traducción e Interpretación), The Translator, TIS (Translation and Interpreting Studies), The International Journal of the Sociology of Language and numerous edited volumes. She has led research projects on Intercultural communication and healthcare in Argentina, Australia, Brazil, the European Union, Malaysia and the United States. She designed the first empirically-driven language proficiency and interpreter readiness tests for The California Endowment and Hablamos Juntos (We Speak Together, Robert Wood Johnson Foundation). Prof. Angelelli is Past President of the American Translation and Interpreting Studies Association and has served as Director of the American Translators Association for 6 years.  She has been world project leader for ISO 13611: Standards on Community Interpreting and she has co-authored The California Standards for Health Care Interpreters. Ethical Principles, Protocols, and Guidance on Interpreter Roles and Interventions. Prof. Angelelli has extensive experience as freelancer and consultant in translation, interpreting, language and access,  bilingualism at the workplace, curriculum design for translation, interpreting and heritage language as well as for communication with cultural and  linguistically diverse patients/clients in medical contexts.

Maico Roris Severino has a bachelor’s degree in Industrial Engineering – Agroindustrial, master’s and Ph.D. in Industrial Engineering from the Universidade Federal de São Carlos (UFSCar), Brazil. He is currently a professor at the Universidade Federal de Goiás (UFG), Brazil, working in undergraduate and graduate courses. At the same university, she is currently a professor working in undergraduate courses, and a PhD candidate studying Digital Inclusion, Literacy and Cultural Politics. Ganna Borzenkova is a research associate at the School of Languages and Intercultural Studies, Heriot-Watt University, UK. She has a multidisciplinary background with experience in real-world design research, teaching and working for industry. Her research interest lies in design for health and well-being with the core interest in the role of design to engender social interactions, subjective well-being and social behavioural change. Her most recent work (January-July 2021) was designing the artwork for a serious game in EBIC.

Daniel Maciel is a Sworn Translator and a professional Conference Interpreter with over 7 million words translated and revised and approximately 700 days of interpretation over a multi-year career.

He holds a Master of Conference Interpreting degree from York University and is an accredited Sworn Translator, in addition to having completed dozens of courses and refreshers in multiple areas of the industry.

Elena Langdon M.A., CT, CoreCHI is a qualified Portuguese-English interpreter with over 15 years of experience. She has a Masters in Translation Studies (2006) from the University of Massachusetts Amherst and has logged over 350 hours of specialized continuing education in simultaneous interpreting, interpreter training, and translation. Elena is a certified translator (Portuguese to English – American Translators Association) and a core-certified healthcare interpreter (CCHI). She is very active in professional associations and has been on the board of directors of the American Translators Association, a professional organization with over ten thousand members. As a conference interpreter, Elena has worked in the medical, biotech, educational, non-profit, business, and law enforcement sectors. Her wide-ranging experience includes working with small delegations as they tour facilities or attend conferences, and working in a booth at an event with 5,000 attendees. She has interpreted for well-known figures like Attorney-General Jeff Sessions and Simon Sinek, as well as battered women, Brazilian surgeons, and local immigrants. Elena also worked for over six years as the supervisor of Interpreter and Translation Services at a large healthcare system. Elena currently teaches at UMass Amherst and Glendon College of York University. She produces a podcast about interpreters called Not Quite Magic, and co-runs two businesses – one for training interpreters, called Seven Sisters Learn, and one that provides remote simultaneous interpreting (RSI) services, called String & Can Multilingual Online.
